Outlook calendar and contact sync issues can have different causes depending on the account type, app, permissions, and sync settings. Microsoft recommends checking how the account is configured, whether calendar and contact access is enabled, and whether the affected account is syncing correctly before removing and re-adding it. This guide walks through calendar and contacts sync across the four places it usually breaks, iPhone, Android, Outlook on the web, and desktop Outlook, plus the Google Calendar case, which works differently than people expect. In Outlook mobile, Microsoft recommends confirming the affected calendar is selected, allowing the required contact permissions, enabling contact sync where needed, and using Reset Account or removing and re-adding the account if the issue continues. For Exchange Online, Microsoft began blocking Exchange ActiveSync clients older than version 16.1 on March 1, 2026 and confirmed on August 4, 2026 that enforcement was complete across all cloud environments. Outlook for iOS and Android is not affected by this EAS restriction because Outlook Mobile uses Microsoft’s native synchronization technology rather than Exchange ActiveSync. For internet calendar subscriptions, ICS calendars are read-only and updates can sometimes take more than 24 hours.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Why account type matters for calendar and contact sync<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Before any settings screen, understand this: not every way of connecting to Outlook can carry a calendar and contacts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

IMAP and POP are email access protocols. Microsoft states that they do not sync calendars or contacts. If a mobile account is configured using IMAP or POP, email can sync while calendar and contact data does not. For Microsoft 365 or Exchange accounts, use a supported Exchange account configuration instead of IMAP or POP, or use Outlook for iOS or Android.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So the first question to ask about any device that won’t sync calendar or contacts is simply: how was this account added? If it went in as IMAP, that’s your answer. For a Microsoft 365 or Exchange account, the fix is to remove it and re-add it using a supported Microsoft or Exchange configuration. Starting March 1, 2026, Exchange Online stopped allowing mobile clients using Exchange ActiveSync versions earlier than 16.1 to connect. Microsoft confirmed on August 4, 2026 that enforcement had been completed across all Exchange Online cloud environments.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This restriction applies to Exchange Online, not Exchange Server, and applies to mobile devices using native email applications that connect through Exchange ActiveSync. Microsoft states that Outlook for iOS and Android does not use the EAS protocol when connecting to Exchange Online and is not affected by this restriction.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Microsoft also states that Apple’s iOS Mail has supported EAS 16.1 since iOS 10. For affected native mobile email applications, Microsoft recommends keeping the device and application updated to a supported version.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
