If you are comparing CiraSync vs iTrezzo in 2026, there is something important to know before comparing feature lists:

iTrezzo Unified Contact Management is now CiraSync On-Prem.

The iTrezzo product release history records the rebrand to CiraSync On-Premise in version 12.0.0 in July 2023. The same release channel continues to publish CiraSync On-Prem updates today, including version 15 releases in 2026.

That means this is no longer a traditional vendor-versus-vendor comparison.

For most organizations, the practical comparison is now:

CiraSync Cloud vs the on-premises product historically known as iTrezzo UCM, now CiraSync On-Prem.

Both address enterprise contact and calendar synchronization, but they solve the deployment problem differently.

CiraSync Cloud is an Azure-hosted SaaS service designed to centrally synchronize Microsoft 365 contacts and calendars without requiring customers to host the synchronization infrastructure themselves. CiraSync On-Prem keeps the synchronization engine inside the organization’s own environment and is positioned for organizations requiring greater infrastructure control, isolated networks, or on-premises Exchange scenarios.

This guide explains the differences that matter to a system administrator evaluating either architecture in 2026.

What Happened to iTrezzo?

According to the official release history, version 12.0.0, released July 7, 2023, included:

“Rebrand to CiraSync on-Premise”

The product has continued receiving development under the CiraSync On-Prem name.

For example, CiraSync On-Prem 15.0.0 introduced full Graph API support and migration work from EWS, while version 15.0.1 added CardDAV support for iOS and Android. Version 15.0.4 followed in August 2026 with additional fixes.

CiraSync Cloud: The SaaS Approach

CiraSync Cloud is designed for organizations that want centralized contact and calendar synchronization without deploying and maintaining the synchronization application on their own Windows Server.

CiraSync describes the service as Azure-hosted and focused on automated one-way synchronization from Microsoft 365 to Outlook and smartphones.

An administrator defines the data source, selects who should receive the information and configures the synchronization centrally.

The service can be used for organizational data including:

  • Microsoft 365 Global Address List contacts
  • Shared mailbox contacts
  • Public Folder contacts
  • Distribution-related contact workflows
  • Shared calendars
  • Other supported contact sources

CiraSync then handles the server-side synchronization process.

There is no CiraSync application that every employee must manually install simply to perform the underlying Cloud synchronization. CiraSync specifically positions Cloud as a zero-touch deployment for users.

For Microsoft 365 administrators, this changes where the operational responsibility sits.

Instead of maintaining a synchronization server, application services, IIS configuration and product upgrades, the customer primarily manages synchronization policies and the Microsoft 365 configuration.

iTrezzo / CiraSync On-Prem: The Self-Hosted Approach

The product historically known as iTrezzo UCM follows a different model.

CiraSync On-Prem places the synchronization application within the customer’s infrastructure.

CiraSync positions it specifically for organizations that require stronger infrastructure isolation or need synchronization to remain within their own environment. Its high-security deployment documentation describes configurations in which processing and synchronization can remain inside the organization’s infrastructure.

That architecture can be relevant to organizations such as:

  • Government agencies
  • Defense environments
  • Financial institutions
  • Critical infrastructure operators
  • Organizations running Exchange Server
  • Hybrid Microsoft environments
  • Organizations with strict data-sovereignty requirements

But on-premises control comes with infrastructure responsibility.

Current CiraSync On-Prem releases require Windows Server 2019 or later.

Depending on the environment, administrators may also need to account for server configuration, service accounts, authentication, application authorization and ongoing product upgrades.

The legacy iTrezzo installation documentation illustrates the difference clearly: deployment historically involved installing the software on an application server, configuring the service mailbox and completing server-side setup before synchronization could begin.

GAL Sync: CiraSync vs iTrezzo

Both architectures were built around one of the same long-standing Microsoft ecosystem problems:

The Exchange or Microsoft 365 Global Address List does not automatically become a native contact directory on every employee smartphone.

CiraSync Cloud can synchronize GAL information into targeted users’ Microsoft 365 contact environments so organizational contacts can ultimately become available to supported devices. Administrators can define which GAL information is synchronized and which users receive it.

The historical iTrezzo product also targeted GAL-to-smartphone synchronization. Its original documentation specifically describes synchronizing Exchange GAL information to iPhone and Android devices. So the principal difference is not simply whether the platforms can synchronize a GAL. The bigger difference is where the synchronization engine operates and who is responsible for maintaining it.

CiraSync Cloud, mailbox path: Microsoft 365 source to CiraSync Cloud to user mailbox contacts to the device, through supported smartphone contact sync

CiraSync Cloud, direct path: Microsoft 365 source to CiraSync Mobile Direct to supported native mobile contacts over CardDAV

CiraSync On-Prem / former iTrezzo: Directory or Exchange source to Customer-hosted CiraSync On-Prem to Contact destination to Smartphone

That distinction should drive the buying decision more than the former product names.

Contact Sync and Mobile Delivery

Another area where administrators should avoid outdated iTrezzo comparisons is mobile delivery. The current product has evolved substantially beyond older versions of iTrezzo UCM.

In 2026, CiraSync On-Prem v15.0.1 added CardDAV support for mobile contact delivery. CiraSync says this allows IT teams to deliver corporate contacts to managed iOS and Android devices without depending on Outlook mobile or older Exchange ActiveSync workarounds.

That means a review of iTrezzo written several years ago may not accurately describe the product that exists today.

CiraSync’s wider product line has also expanded its mobile architecture. Current product documentation describes CardDAV-based Mobile Direct and Native Sync capabilities for delivering contacts to supported iOS and Android environments. The two platforms handle CardDAV differently, which matters for deployment: iOS supports CardDAV natively, so no third-party app is needed on the device, while Android has no complete native CardDAV stack and uses CiraSync’s CardDAV Direct companion app to close that gap. On both platforms, delivery is deployed and managed through a supported MDM.

When evaluating either deployment, verify the exact mobile architecture you intend to use rather than assuming an old iTrezzo workflow still represents the current product.

Microsoft Graph and the EWS Question

This is especially important for system administrators planning beyond 2026.

Legacy Microsoft synchronization products often relied heavily on Exchange Web Services, or EWS.

CiraSync On-Prem’s 2026 release history shows active modernization in this area. Version 15.0.0, released in April 2026, lists:

“Full GraphAPI support + Migration from EWS.”

This does not mean EWS has been eliminated from every On-Prem configuration, particularly environments involving on-premises Exchange. The later v15.0.4 release notes still reference on-prem EWS behavior. But it is a materially different technical position from older iTrezzo deployments.

If you currently run an older iTrezzo installation, do not evaluate your environment based solely on documentation from that older version. Check your installed version, authentication architecture and Microsoft Graph readiness before planning upgrades or migrations.

Administration and Maintenance

For many IT departments, this will be the deciding factor. With CiraSync Cloud, the synchronization platform is hosted for you. CiraSync Cloud runs on Azure and performs automated synchronization without requiring customer-managed synchronization infrastructure.

That generally shifts administrator effort toward:

  • Microsoft 365 authorization
  • Data-source configuration
  • Recipient targeting
  • Contact policies
  • Monitoring synchronization results

rather than maintaining the synchronization application server. With CiraSync On-Prem, the organization controls the application environment.

That gives the administrator more infrastructure control, but also means the organization owns more of the operational stack.

Current CiraSync On-Prem support documentation describes environment-specific service-account and authorization requirements, including Graph API access in supported configurations.

For security-sensitive organizations, that trade-off may be intentional. For a cloud-first Microsoft 365 organization without an on-premises infrastructure requirement, maintaining a dedicated synchronization server may offer less operational benefit.

Security and Data Location

This is another area where CiraSync vs iTrezzo is really an architecture question.

CiraSync Cloud is an Azure-hosted service.

CiraSync On-Prem is designed for environments where organizations need to retain the synchronization workload inside their infrastructure. CiraSync’s high-security documentation describes deployments capable of operating without cloud services or external connectivity for appropriate use cases.

Neither architecture is automatically the correct answer for every organization.

A cloud-first organization may prioritize reduced infrastructure management.

A regulated or isolated organization may prioritize local control over the additional operational responsibility.

The decision should follow your organization’s actual security architecture and compliance requirements.

Is CiraSync an iTrezzo Alternative?

Yes, but the answer requires qualification.

If by iTrezzo alternative you mean, “I want the same basic enterprise GAL and contact synchronization outcome without running the synchronization software on my own server,” then CiraSync Cloud is the relevant alternative.

It provides centralized, Azure-hosted Microsoft 365 contact and calendar synchronization without requiring an iTrezzo-style locally hosted application server.

If instead you mean, “I need to upgrade or replace an existing iTrezzo installation but I still require on-premises deployment,” the direct continuation of that product is CiraSync On-Prem.

And if your requirement is broader two-way or multi-system synchronization between Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, CRM platforms or multiple directories, CiraSync’s current product portfolio separates that use case into CiraSync Hub rather than treating every synchronization scenario as the same product.

Which Architecture Fits Which Environment?

For a modern Microsoft 365 tenant, CiraSync Cloud removes much of the infrastructure that accompanied the traditional iTrezzo deployment.

That makes it relevant when the requirement is primarily:

  • Microsoft 365 GAL synchronization
  • Shared contact distribution
  • Public Folder synchronization
  • Shared calendar distribution
  • Centralized administration
  • iPhone and Android contact availability
  • Reduced server maintenance

CiraSync On-Prem remains relevant when the environment requires:

  • Synchronization inside the customer network
  • Exchange Server support
  • Hybrid architecture
  • Restricted or isolated networking
  • Infrastructure-level control
  • On-premises operational ownership

The distinction is therefore less about which product can synchronize contacts and more about which operating model fits the organization’s Microsoft and security architecture.

Final Takeaway

The most important thing to understand when searching for CiraSync vs iTrezzo in 2026 is that you are not evaluating two completely unrelated competitors. iTrezzo UCM became CiraSync On-Prem.

The real decision is now largely between two deployment models. Choose a cloud architecture when you want CiraSync to provide and maintain the synchronization platform while your administrators centrally control the Microsoft 365 sync configuration.

Choose the current On-Prem architecture when synchronization needs to remain within your infrastructure or your Exchange, hybrid, security or isolation requirements make local deployment necessary.

And if you are already running iTrezzo, check the installed version before assuming you need an entirely different product. The platform has continued evolving under the CiraSync On-Prem name, including Graph API and CardDAV updates released in 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions
